MOPA Kangemi Forum

MOPA Kangemi Forum

On 15th May 2010, MOPA teamed up with the Slum Dwellers Association of Kenya to organize a public accountability forum in Kangemi. This group which has recently been registered with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs draws its membership from low income cadres. The event attracted about 300 participants drawn from Kangemi, Uthiru, Mathare, Starehe-Bondeni /Mlango Kubwa, Korogocho, Dandora and Kenyatta University. Among the speakers were representatives from MOPA, Kituo cha Sheria, Uraia, IIEC and the KNCHR

The forum provided an opportunity to distribute the MOPA Charters and also copies of the proposed constitution that were made available by the Committee of Experts. Participants strongly stated that the proposed constitution had the capacity to provide a new beginning for mutual coexistence among impoverished Kenyan communities. Many liked the very strong bill of rights which in their view assured every one of some minimum standards of housing while the youth are to be provided with opportunities for skills development and training. This forum was therefore an eye opener on how the YES campaign can change its messaging to demonstrate in real terms how ordinary people’s lives will benefit if the new constitutionis enacted.
