Statement by the European Union regarding today’s meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

European Union envoys were invited to a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs today.

Envoys rejected any allegation of interfering in the elections process.  They were clear that it is for the Kenyan people to elect their leaders. The European Union does not support any candidate for any office. We trust the Kenyan people to make wise decisions and elect responsible leaders.

Kenya: Local Judicial Mechanism Should Complement ICC Cases

(Nairobi, April 27, 2012) – The Kenyan government should reaffirm its commitment to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in cases stemming from the 2007-2008 post-election violence, while establishing a local judicial mechanism to investigate and prosecute other suspects, Kenyans for Peace with Truth and Justice (KPTJ) and Human Rights Watch said today.

George Kegoro: The New Kenyan Constitution

In August 2010, Kenya passed a new constitution after 20 years of attempts and a failed constitutional referendum in 2005. After the 2005 failure, efforts to try again were set aside and only regained momentum after the post-election violence in 2007--2008, which underscored the need for a new constitution.
